Early Experiences
Well, I was a "TV junkie" as a kid. I liked how it could virtually transport you to another world, another time. A lot of the shows I watched really played on your imagination in blending different elements, especially sound and visuals. The combinations would define a world far removed from your own...and therefore worth exploring. I also watched a lot of movies.
Understanding Sound
The role of sound in a film shouldn't be noticeable at all. It has a very esoteric relationship to the narrative of a film. On a closer scale, within the context of a movie, sound parallels the passage of time and events. Getting you in and out of the motion and in and out of the action.
Soundelux Studio Cd
Soundelux Studio C - As recent projects The Green Mile, Toy Story 2 and American Beauty, have established Signet as an important music mixing and scoring facility. Signet Soundelux also has a solid music clientele, including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morissette, Wynton Marsalis, Phil Collins, Kenny G and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
The Approach
My first step is dictated by what the film is-not necessarily its genre as much as its individual essence. I first try to understand the essence that is unique to the film. It's the concept of the director and the writer-images to which I'd integrate the sound.
Subtlety and Naturalism
In order for sound to be effective in the storytelling process, you can't have sound be too far ahead or behind the picture. The impact of sound is as subtle as the visual narrative, where everything develops piece by piece. And near the end, the audience thinks-hey, it really all fits together!
